Most Foul

I have read two of Keshi’s post hitting out at death penalty, but I am really not convinced that we shud do away with it. Its very good to be compassionate, I am companionate too but my compassion lies with the victim, with their families and their folks. I am not sure if a first time drug trafficker shud have been handed out death penalty but there are so many criminal acts, so ruthless and dastardly that the ultimate punishment and nothing less is called for. Remember its not putting an end to an individual criminal, it’s a way to end crime, by deterring people, for making world a safer place to live. Even with death penalty there is no fear, if it is totally done away with what wud happen is any bodies guess.

Especially in a country like India, where there are so many incidents every day, rape murder, you open the television and there u are, and I get that sinking feeling. I cant stop my self from thinking about those last few seconds those moments when some was being raped or some one was being killed, the helplessness of the victim comes to my mind and more so when the victim is a girl or a woman, men still have a chance to fight back but……….

The crimes committed by people whom the victim knew and trusted. Early this year Dhananjay was hanged to death, for what he had done, I think it was absolutely right to hang him. He was watchman for the building where his victim lived. A young school going girl, her parents must have been assured that there was this watchman, so they cud leave there daughter alone in their apartment. One afternoon when this girl came back from school, Dhananjay knew she was alone, he rang the door bell ……raped that girl and killed her. Ask all those people who loved that girl, how they felt when they found their darling lying in a heap.

Three incidents that took place over the last few weeks have left me wondering as to whether we can trust any one at all.

There was this Hindu girl who fell in love with her Muslim neighbor, the girls parents where dead against any such relationship, but the girl wud not listen so they sent the girl to Temple, where she was kept forcible. However the girl wud not relent, so parents hired some people to kill their daughter. While the girl was sleeping the mother opened the door for the assailants, and she watched those people strangle her daughter to death. You just shudder, a mother can get people to kill her child and then sit and watch …..

The next victim was a girl who taught at a Computer Center, the guy who helped knew she wud be the last person to leave the Center that afternoon, so each time he gave her Tea it was laced with sleeping pills, by the time everyone had left, this girl fell asleep. Then that guy tried to rape her but she managed to put some resistance, so he killed her.

The last incident is really unbelievable, how cud any one think leave alone do it. The guy gets engaged to this girl whom his parents had chosen, even though he had a girl friend. For sometime he went around with his fiancée, one day he took her for a drive. He stopped the car at a secluded spot and asked the girl how much you love. The girl did not know what was coming, innocently she said she cud do anything for him even give her life for him. Then this guy said all right you lie down in front of the car, she hesitated but the guy made her do it, she must have thought it’s a joke, but he actually drove over her with the intention of killing her, though thankfully she survived.

Now what do u do with these cold blooded criminals, feel compassionate towards them, let them loose so they come back for more blood………

The idea of Capital punishment is not to kill people, its about saving the innocent, by deterring the people from committing those crimes. To have a society where there are no criminals and no victims.

The idea behind this post is also to warn those girls going out to study and to work. Never let your guard down, even when you are with people whom you know and trust. You alone can prevent yourself from becoming a victim. If u have to stay back late and alone (u being the lone female) ask some female friend to wait for you, you can do the same in return. Avoid places and situations where u cud be the likely…..how about carrying pepper spray……..

  • Beautiful post. I love it. And I agree wholeheartedly. There is no reason to do away with the death penalty. Those who say they want it done away with, obviously haven't lost any of their loved ones to murder or rape etc.

Pepper spray is a great idea. I think I must go get myself a can!

  • Jackal I understand u...it's not that I condone the victims of violent crimes. My post against the death penalty was also abt another violent crime in the name of the law...that was my point...and it wasnt put up to under-estimate the pain any other victim goes through. Death is cruel no matter what the circumstance is and we have no right to take another's life.

**let them loose so they come back for more blood………

who said this? I dun think my post said this anywhere. All I suggested was lifetime imprisonment. besides death is easy for the criminal...those who have to live with it r the ppl who get punished, like their families. Just like the victims' families. No one's winning by the death penalty cos dead ppl cannot be brought back to life neither can they be punished.

  • And by compassion I didnt mean that the criminal should walk out scot-free...he/she should suffer in prison for life.

There is also something called human rights...if the criminals dont know what it is, we don't have to follow in their footsteps to set an example to our kids...there are other ways to deal with such criminals. Or else who is going to hang us?

  • ***I am companionate too but my compassion lies with the victim, with their families and their folks. I

it's expected compassion Jackal..anyone feel sorry fo rthe victims' family. I feel that too...did u think I didnt? :)

The compassion I was talking abt was on a higher humanity level...the kind of compassion u feel for criminals too not to set them free...but not to be barbaric enough to kill them.

I dun think it's hard to achieve that if u think wisely...cos the whole of Europe abolished death penalty...there must be a reason why they did that..and now these countries r not over the top with crime either. If u look at it seriously, it's the countries with death penaly that have more crime than the ones that don't have it. So it doesnt prove that death penalty is a deterrent in any way.

Anyways...u support death penalty and I still detest it...lets just agree to disagree. btw u could have dropped a comment in my post...

  • Hi:)
ahem..u are on spree of thought provoking posts:)good 1..while i totally agree with u..tht ppl who commit such grave sins against humanity shuld be punished properly..so that they become a symbol fr others..and a deterence as well
but thn again..1 shuld never forget abt the reason or mensrea behind a crime..if a person kills smbdy in self defence..shuld he/she b punished tht severely?
    and look at this..
in gulf states..person dealing in heroine..are punishable with death penality..and they hang thm from the top most building..
and usually the guys who get caught r ppl who belongs 2 v poor backgrounds and they think 1 trip will make there lives or they will b able to marry there sister or daughter..or provide fr the medical bills of sm dying mother..
    is it fair?

  • Thnx Ms V
....all i want is that no innocent person is killed.... there are no rapes......first 11 months of this yr rape count in Delhi alone stands at 600....n these are just the reported cases....i am sure there are as many cases which havent been reported as people are too ashamed to come forward......

By Blogger Jackal, at 11:13 AM

  • Keshi:

Its nothing personal..i wanted to post this even b4 ur post....since the President has initiated a debate on this topic.....n then i saw ur post..n those 2 death penalities......

Keshi dont u think instead of people fighting over this issue.....shud not those criminals understand the consequence of thier actions....y people put themselves in such situations ? Death is indeed cruel....y dont the culprits see that....if criminals can understand this there will be no violent deaths......
**let them loose so they... u had not said that but tht's wht happens.......i think i had earlier some where mentioned abt this guy who killed an old man...got out on bail a yr later he killed some one else.....and after a year he is back...in fact just came frm jail this evening.......lets see who is the next victim

Keshi: i think human rights shud be left for humans....

Look i am not rigid that criminals must be hanged....if a way can be found to stop killings of innocnet ppl that's fine with me...if we can get rid of those violent crimes frm our society in some other way tht's gud enuf.......

By Blogger Jackal, at 12:00 PM

  • Sebia:
hi ......no reason is good enuf for any one to commit a crime....as far killing in self defense isnt a crime even in a court of law...so we need not call tht a crime.....
I know tht punishment is very harsh in gulf countries.....but i think as far as its fair trial.....lot of time innocent ppl are duped into carrying those drugs etc...who get caught n get punished for no crime..those things shud not happen....the real culprits..the guilty shud be......
But i am sure u agree that there are few crimes and life is realitvely safer in those countries......

By Blogger Jackal, at 12:09 PM

  • Hi:)
good morning..in my half DOPED(Sleepy)state im here bak again...
well jackal i know self defence isnt tht much of a crime..but still its punishable in some trials fr 2 0r 3 yrs..whn they say u could have shot the person in leg or smwhere 2 deter him/her in self defence...but do u think..in tht heightened state of fear anybody can stop?and think how and where to shoot or stuff?
plus MENSREA can b varied..and though its a viscious cycle im proving ur point again..but lets imagineif a persons wife or daughter or sister is raped or killed or tortured by somebody and tht criminal is still at loose..enacting the same crimes against other and smhow he wsnt proven guilty...wouldnt he b the temptation enough 2 b killed by smbdy nearest and dearest of the victom?though it will b a planned 1 and considered it s a crime but still...
i heard abt smbdy who killed his bro in law..because his sister ws burnt alive..after so many demands of money..and it ws considered as an accident by court..and tht guy and his family were held free..though tht grl whn she ws dying specifically 2k there names
the brother went to have a fight with his bro in law,,and during the heated arguement smashed his head with the glass vase and the guy died..and though it was an accident the guy was convicted as murderer and hence went 2prison...wht an irony.
    tc...
cant refute more on empty stomach and sleepy head:0

  • Thnx Sebia for the trouble…look u wud agree what u are saying essentially concerns with inefficient law and not with the form of punishment, I feel. Its failure of law that those responsible for burning that woman get away scot-free. That’s another point of discussion, we are all aware how the judicial system works in this country. Especially in the lower courts justice is a mockery, its hardly fair. Only money decides the fate. Anyway, if they had been let off by a lower court they shud have gone to a higher court, they shud have got convictions, as evidence from a dying person is very effective. Taking law in own hands no matter what the reasons behind that is still a crime. But then again a preplanned murder is different from one where some one is accidentally killed, and if there is a fair trial the court surely takes that into account. Today there was this news from middle east, two persons had a scuffle, one lost his eye the court ruled an eye for an eye, now this sort of judgment is ridiculous.Actually what is needed is a judicial system which is just and fair, where cases are not left pending for ages. That will also call for a police force which is not only competent but also corruption free. Remember it is the Police which files the charges, many times they take money and file charges in such a manner that it becomes easy for defense lawyers. Sometime they just don’t care, once when the Police pulled out this corpse from a well, I was there too, they asked few people if they knew the victim when they drew a blank, they began writing there report, ‘unidentified body’, I said hang on this guy is wearing a shirt there shud a tailors tag there. It was there later from that they did find out the identity of the victim and did mange to nab the culprits too. Had they put unidentified the case wud have surely gone nowhere. So I think there is urgent need to revamp the whole system.

  • U shuld join the FBI...u surely will succeed in tht field:0
    good points..

By Blogger sebia, at 12:17 PM

  • Jackal u r comparing a first-time drug trafficker with heinous murderers...is that fair?

Im not saying we should be easy on drug traffickers but does anyone deserve death? Anyone at all? Who are we to decide that? If u decide that he should die, then u r guilty of crime as much as the criminal! It promotes violence by law or not. Thats all I have to say...:)

No more argument on this...lets just agree to disagree :)

    Keshi.

By Blogger Keshi, at 9:31 PM

  • i feel ashamed after hearing such such incident coz nothing we can do rather than saying its pity and a eyes with full of tears, hanging in sad environment.........why lives has been so cheap valuless for a creature spreading voilence.......
i guess keshi and u both r right in a own way.....death penalty is not a remedial measure unless plp are r regreting for such crime.........those merciless who spread crime must be there to survive with that pain of killing someone..........they should be their to feel that sorrow and pathetic life......death is easy penalty for such merciless creature but as there's no such rule hanging such life in a black prison, they r release through down table money or manage to run away......so death seems to be one better option
our country has no such death penalty but only a life imprison, reach can easily afford to be out from the prison as whole world is corrupted....so death penalty is better if corruption win the goal

    take care jackal
    wish u grt day ahead

thnx for ur suggestion but i wud not like to work for a country like US...i dont think any other government is soo full of hypocrites as the US..may be i sud join the CBI instead of FBI : )

    Keshi :

No more arguments here..in fact i shud not even call it an argument it just that we have diverse opinion on this one......hugzzzzzzz byee tcc

    Nitika :

As u rightly pointed out the whole problem stems from corruption..politicians, police and judiciary......if the the trials are quick and fair...where the guilty know that they wud not go un punished this wud go a long way in bring down crime...unfortunately is not that way and criminals have no fear of the law.

  • It's really saddening to read about such incidences ...

We are safe nowhere??? Tiz a pity!

Have heard abt 1-2 incidents u've mentioned here ... i was actually shocked!!

But as far as the issue concerning the death penalty is concerned ... i still prefer agreeing with Keshi ... once dead, the criminal wouldnt really realise that he actually committed a crime!

Anyway ... different ppl different minds different opinions ........

P.S You're actually suppose to leave ur blog URL on the blog u visit ... t'was difficult tracing you for me.

    Cheerz!

  • Cheesy :

Sorry for the trouble .....yeah its indeed sad......as far as the death penalty see its not just abt killing that one indvidual..its abt instilling fear in the hearts of those indulging in such crimes..remmember death penalty is not given in all murder cases, at least in India it is only for those "rarest of rare crimes"...thnx byee tccc

    Deepa:

absolutely true Deepa, some how ppl dont think that any thing wud happen to them and that false impression of safety some times results into an unfortunate incident....

Unfortunately all of them are true Deepa, the last incident took place few days back in Gujarat......

    Pinki :

If all men were to become like me the world wud be pretty boring place to live .....any way thnx for ur compliments....its just that i have seen so much....esp these crimes frm very close qtrs that i feel so strongly abt.....tcc byee

  • reading the comments here reminds me of a heated debate at home about the death penalty. Both of u...keshi n u...are right in ur own views. Every crime deserves to be punished but the punishment shud be accordin to d crime. And i so agree with the point... death penalty is 'death' within the law... No one has the right to take away someone's life. See how twisted thinking can get...when u see people kill in the name of protecting threir religious rights... nothing justifies death.

thought i'd make a mention here of a show i saw on forgiving people...personally i can never be so forgiving....but it talked about rape victims letting go of pain and hurt and forgiving...of murder victim's family coming to terms with their grief and forgiving the criminal...!

quite unbelievable but those stories were as real as the ones u have here.... makes u wonder...doesn't it? Where in d world do they derive this kind of strength...to let go of the past and move on...

By Blogger ishipishi, at 9:26 PM

  • Ishita:

U have raised very valid points.....as for as forgiving....if any one can do it its wonderful...but then how many ppl can forgive esp when the crime is as horrfying as rape n murder.....its not that i feel happy to see ppl being hanged......its just trying to drill in those wud be culprits tht if u do this then this is the consequnce u face.......and if ppl there by are dettered frm commiting those ghastly crimes..where every one is safe then y not...........tcc byee
