Mummy i want to live

If unborn baby gals cud speak from the womb this is what they wud be saying……aborting baby gals and even killing the newly born is still so rampant among the Indians. I always thought it was due to illiteracy, however I was shocked to find out that the problem is as grim among the Indians even in places like England and New Jersey in US. I think it is one of the most shameful and ugly part of our society. The numbers are absolutely shocking on the whole there are only about 937 females to every 1000 males, but in some parts these stats are much worse for example in Karnataka there are only 870 females to every 1000 males. If you compare the all India stat for second born children then female ratio stands at 917………

What is most disgusting that only are girls being killed in the womb, at places they are being killed even after birth. I was horrified to see this report on TV where villagers were paying this woman ‘dai’ (the one who helps in delivery) to kill the child at birth if it was a girl. These women actually smother the newly born girl child by putting a wet towel on her face and just declare outside that the child died during birth. Everyone knows what actually took place but no questions are asked. In one of the villages they showed there are actually no female children at all only unmarked graves outside the village.

I think a lot of it comes from the religion which says that a son should be there to light the funeral pyre, God see’s the son lightening the pyre but doesn’t he those cold blooded murders? And then from the society, where mothers of girl children are looked down upon, the dowry racket, where parents are required to pay large amounts to get the girl married, the girl is supposed to be a burden and the boy a helping hand, but can really any justification be good enough to carry out such hideous acts.

The Government is doing its bit to stop the problem but its hardly making any impact. Ultrasounds just done for determination of sex have been banned, but the greedy doctor’s continue to perform them. They wont give u in writing but at some places after the ultrasound they just greet the parents Jai Shriram and Jai Sita Ma and u know what he is trying to say. More than the law u need to change the mind set. The gals should strive a v bit harder to throw that burden tag, tell the world that they are not less capable in any way. They should also refuse to marry a guy who seeks dowry, a few girls have walked out from the wedding ceremony and there is no reason why others cannot do it. In any case I think the kind of guy who seeks help in shape of dowry doesn’t have any self-respect, he is not the kind of guy to be there for you always he isn’t a man. Why marry such an idiot.

I don’t understand all those sense less abortions too, they are as good as murders, why do people after all those precautions available now need to go in for an abortions. The other day I was with this absolute gorgeous looking gal n we were kind of discussing these issues when I was told that her mum too was keen to abort her, I was kind of shocked and did not know what to say, if others had not convinced her mum otherwise this gal wud not have made it to this world.

All I want to say to the people who feel that what is happening is wrong..stand up and be counted. Most of us feel so aggrieved about things but tend not to do anything, thinking how they can alone change it, but I feel that every one needs to do whatever lil he can…….

    damn..isnt she a women also

I seriously thank my upbringing over here...I can be frank enough to say that i've never been sidelined in any reason just because i'm a female...personally, i've been treated as an equal all along and i'm grateful for that

  • Very touchy a relevant post..
want for a male baby is very much in the terai people of Nepal who are alike to indian in someway and their dowry system....I think dowry system is however the main cause for aborting female child....the female child whether have no life or if born then compel to live the hell-life
I have one fren who belong to such background...he is well educated...knows everything but he still prefer to take bigger amount of dowry...always wanna give him one slap....I fight with him and he explain “it’s our culture if its beneficial for me then why not accepting the tradition”...how coward...see only the only education will do nothing unless n until our so called cultural norms and values are not reformed we r forced to live by that...n we r the one who can change the situation to the better......

    take care jack

  • Bharat:

Thnx...i know it happens but tht’s another issue....

    Alive n confused:

    Indeed its very very sad....

    Kusum:

Yeah its disgusting tht even now ppl diffentiate...

    Praveen:

Yes surely u don’t expect educated ppl to have such parochial outlook...such scant respect for human life....not only the ‘dai’ but the whole lot of other women in the household are responsible too...it’s a shame tht females are responsible
for killing some one just because she is a female baby.....Yes praveen u shud be thankful tht u were not born in one of those household…where ppl have sick minds....

    Uttara:

No doubt its sad n all this for love/need for son...whereas u generally find tht gals are more helpful to their parents...

    Sebia:

This is the last time u late in here...next time I won’t open the door for ya...I know u are pampered but not here : )......worse than snakes...we are supposed to be humans.....very barbaric esp those after the birth killings...

    Confused:

Thnx for the info...village with only one gal...tht reminds me of the village I mentioned in Rajasthan there was also just one gal in tht village...n she had survived as her parents hid frm the village tht the child born was a female...always dressed her as a male....I don’t want to argue ab abortions being rt or wrong but these days they can easily be avoided....

    Niti:

Yeah dowry is one big reason tht ppl don’t want to have a ga.....and I am sorry to say tht uf frnd looking for dowry has no self respect...any one with a even with a v bit self respect wud never do tht....n again as u said it’s the society....i don’t understand the very ppl who crib abt giving dowry have no qualms abt asking dowry when they are marrying a son.......i think the gals have it in them to change this....kick those idiots out who come asking for dowry....

    Deepa:

Don’t know y u had problem......we call ourselves modern educated n all.....but if u really see beneath the surface nothing has changed ..

    Pinki:

I think it continues because no one is willing to do anything.....I don’t do it...but I don’t care what the other person is doing....its time tht ppl raise their voice when they see something like this happening.....u know there is law which bans such sex determination test..a fine of Rs 100000 and 5 yrs behind the bar of carrying out such abortions…but it continues.......

  • i was here a couple of days back...wrote a lengthy comment but then i got an internal server error msg:-(...

well...this wkend i was at a party whre this couple was celebrating their second daughter's 1st birthday...it was lovely party and a very happy occasion. I sat there and thought of your post and then I saw both the mom and dad of these two lovely girls and all the joy they get from their girls...it made me feel good...and i wish more parents would cherish their daughters like...these parents...like mine...and many others...

  • They wont give u in writing but at some places after the ultrasound they just greet the parents Jai Shriram and Jai Sita Ma and u know what he is trying to say..never heard of that

By Blogger Shikha, at 2:48 AM

  • Meghna:

'i got a fwd message' nice to hear tht at least ppl are thinking......

    deepa:

sometimes i feel the same....n wht i really find disgusting is when even educated refuse to change.......

By Blogger Jackal, at 10:44 AM

  • Ishita:

so some one has at least been thinking.....it was nice to hear abt the happy parents......but its not all dark....there are ppl to luv n care thier daughters........its just those.......

    Shikha:

months back they were showing this on TV and tht prog was shot in Gujarat.......

By Blogger Jackal, at 10:49 AM

  • phew!! yeah its a fact...however disgusting but it is the truth....n not juz the killing...even those who get to live are they actually allowed to live? they r always treated as a burdon.....to b married off and get rid off as early as possible....and those who r harassed after marriage...how many of them get their parents support to survive....hmmm...

By Blogger Harashita R. R. Bajaj, at 7:49 AM

  • I completely agree with you...

And you know the saddest part in this...mostly women play a big role in perpetuating this "son" syndrome..by pressurising their daughter in laws for a boy...
coa they feel its imp to carry the family name fwd...what the hell...girls can do that too!!

We all need to change our mind sets..,move and shift a little...

When I say I wont marry a guy who asks for or even accepts dowry...ppl tell me I am being highheaded and education's ruined me..

    Such is our society
